What to see around

sottotitolo

Catania is the most sought-after southern destination in Italy for its location, beauty and energy.

Ognina is located 1 km from Amaranda B&B.

It is an ancient seaside village, today one of the most typical areas of Catania where you can find the most delicious seafood street food in the city.

In ancient times on the small beach of the village, there was a Doric temple dedicated to Athena Longatis, the patron goddess of battles at sea, venerated by every man who ventured into the sea.

Today the temple has been replaced by the church of Santa Vergine Maria: on 8 September, the day it was consecrated, the Madonna saint’s festival is celebrated. Firstly the statue of the Vergine Maria goes around the alleys of the village to give the blessing to the believers, after they place it on a boat illuminated by small lanterns and the characteristic procession at sea begins.

Riviera dei Ciclopi is a stretch of coast about 12 km long that goes from Acicastello to Acireale, the northern area of Catania.

The villages that overlook this area, rich in natural beauty, lava stone and myths, owe their name to the legend of Aci, which tells the love between the shepherd Aci and the beautiful sea nymph Galatea. According to the legend, Polyphemus, in love with Galatea, guided by jealousy, threw a huge rock on Aci, killing him. The nymph then begged the gods to return her beloved and they transformed it into a river, where Galatea and Aci could meet.

Acitrezza is well known for its Faraglioni, huge rocks on the sea that arise from another legend, told in Homer’s Odyssey.

The origin of the rocks of Acitrezza lies in the anger of the Cyclops Polyphemus who, blinded by Ulysses, would have thrown huge boulders against him to curse and prevent him from escaping to the sea.

Driving from the South to the North of Catania, the Riviera dei Ciclopi is the most beautiful part of the city where you can take a swim and enjoy an aperitif by the sea.

Taormina is the jewel of art of eastern Sicily: a precious place made up of typical views and panoramic corners, surrounded by the Ionian coast and the green hills. Taormina, reachable from Catania in just 30 minutes by car, is the ideal destination for those who love to spend a day at the beach and after enjoy the beauty of local spots such as (in this case) Isola Bella, the Greek Theatre and the Belvedere in Piazza IX Aprile.

Ortigia is the historic centre of Syracuse, the white pearl of Sicily. A magical place that contains centuries of history and art, all to be visited and discovered. An hour’s drive from Catania, Ortigia is one of the places in Sicily not to be missed: from the Duomo to the characteristic alleys full of shops, it is an aggregate of beauty that will make your visit unforgettable.

The historic centre of Catania is 7km from Amaranda B&B.

Between baroque churches and historic buildings, culinary specialities and popular traditions, the city covered with lava stone deserves a guided tour of the most important streets. You can’t miss Piazza Duomo with its iconic cathedral of Sant’Agata, the patron saint of Catania, celebrated during the popular festival of Sant’Agata which is held on February 5th; Via Crociferi, with its succession of baroque churches; the Benedictine Monastery and the church of San Nicolò l’Arena; the Greek-Roman theatre in Via Vittorio Emanuele; the fish market of Catania, an ancient and popular market that welcomes citizens and tourists every morning with fresh fish and typical delicacies.

Almost 3,400 m high, Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. An unmissable destination, Etna is the ideal place to have an experience in nature. Hiking and trekking of different difficulties, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and adventure parks: Etna is not only a volcano to visit and admire in all its majesty but also a unique place where you can spend a sporting day.

About an hour’s drive from Catania, the Alcantara Gorges are one of the most spectacular natural sites in Sicily. Immersed in the hinterland of the island, they are geological rock formations, which appear as large volcanic basalt canyons.

Known all over the world, the Alcantara Gorges are the ideal place for a day in nature and full of adventures.
